Depression

Causes

Depression is thought to arise from a combination of genetic or biological factors, and stressful life events such as illness, major bereavement or break-up of a relationship. Sometimes there is no apparent trigger.*

Signs

  • Depressed mood
  • Markedly decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities
  • Significant weight changes or appetite change
  • Insomnia, disturbed sleep or hypersomnia
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or excessive/inappropriate guil
  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate
  • Thoughts of self-harming or suicide (or has made an attempt)
