Causes
Depression is thought to arise from a combination of genetic or biological factors, and stressful life events such as illness, major bereavement or break-up of a relationship. Sometimes there is no apparent trigger.*
Signs
- Depressed mood
- Markedly decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities
- Significant weight changes or appetite change
- Insomnia, disturbed sleep or hypersomnia
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or excessive/inappropriate guil
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate
- Thoughts of self-harming or suicide (or has made an attempt)
